Form4 has a commitment to enhancing the relationship between the Architectural Profession and Academia. We believe that stronger ties between these groups is a benefit to students, architecture firms, clients and society in general.
Since 1996 John Marx has taught Arch 135: Digital Design at the University of California, at Berkeley. This course studies the process of Architectural Design using three dimensional computer modeling programs, and two dimensional computer graphics programs. The objective is to gain an understanding of an alternative design methodology which augments traditional Architectural practices. The vehicle for this study will be the design of a simple building, exclusively created via a computer. The completed three dimensional building design will be used to study two dimensional forms of representation and creative expression.
The student's work has been recognized internationally in a variety of venues:
In 1998 Andrew Wong won first place (Award of Distinction), and in 1999 Wilson Auyeung won a second place (Award of Merit) in the "Partnerships in Learning Joint Study Program" which is sponsored by AutoDesSys. This is an international competition, for which about 190 schools participate. These schools include all the major universities in North America, as well as Europe. Students submit projects designed using FormZ, a 3D computer modeling program. A jury of five practitioners and Educators select the winners and a few Honorable Mentions.
Daniel Guich, was published in the April 1999 issue of Architectural Record, as the lead image for an article on Computer Education.
An Argentine Magazine, Arquitectura Digital, published an image created by Andrew Wong on the cover of its December issue. In addition, images by five other CED students; Li Kuo, Marcus Stokes, Daniel Guich, Seonho Hahn, Philip Ong were featured inside, in an article by John Marx entitled "Metodologia de Diseno Digital". This article was a translation into Spanish of an article written for ACADIA 98.
